Since 2009 Hamburg has once again had its own municipal energy supplier: HAMBURG ENERGIE.
The enterprise is independent of any other companies, is 100 per cent owned by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and only provides clean energy: green power and municipal biogas.
HAMBURG ENERGIE is more than just an energy trader: the company invests in its own renewable generation plants in Hamburg and the metropolitan region – from photovoltaics to wind power and biomass.
HAMBURG ENERGIE has undertaken to generate at least half the
electricity supplied to private customers in its own power plants within
five years. For this promise, HAMBURG ENERGIE’s electricity products
are the first in Germany to be certified with the OK power label in
accordance with the initiation model. This means that every HAMBURG
ENERGIE customer is actively contributing to the expansion of renewable
energy in Hamburg and the metropolitan region. This is not just good for
the climate, but also strengthens the regional economy and creates
jobs. Profits from energy generation and sale stay where they were made
and benefit the region. Since the company was founded, it has erected
plants with a total capacity of 20 megawatts and gained 90,000 private
